Compound microscopes (also known as upright biological microscopes or high-power microscopes) are used for viewing flat transparent specimens not typically visible to the human eye. These are most often used in laboratories and educational institutions, with samples mounted on glass slides. Compound microscopes are designed for observation from 40x to 1000x magnification. They consist of a two-part system combining objective lenses and the eye piece(s) to present the image to the user.
We offer three main types of compound microscopes:
Clinical and lab: these are for professional users such as veterinarians, medical professionals, and researchers, they usually include ergonomic equipment for sustained operation.
Educational: From young children to graduate students, we offer a range of levels of microscopes no matter what you’re looking for. Our educational tools are great for everyone.
Hobby: If you’re interested in microscopes, we’ve got something perfect for you. We offer budget options for the beginner and advanced options for the more experienced hobbyist.
Compound microscopes have 3 main choices of viewing head, and we offer them all with the relevant accessories and supplementary parts.
Trinocular: combining both binocular eyepieces, and a separate port for attaching a digital camera, to document samples via digital imaging. Including DSLR and C-Mount cameras.
Binocular: these can have additional ergonomic features built in to ensure user comfort, such as interpupillary and height adjustment for heavy users.
Monocular: view samples with a single eyepiece, used in entry level and educational settings.
Illumination type and contrast technique is also an important consideration in compound microscope configuration. It’s possible with upright biological microscopes to add virtually any contrast technique available. Namely Brightfield, Darkfield, DIC, Phase contrast, Polarisation, and Fluorescence. These are best selected to match applicable samples.
Compound microscopes consist of many selectable and optional parts, and these machines work best when configured to the specific task of the user. There are many standard packages offered here to give you an idea of typical configurations available. We hope these inspire you to work with us to configure your own tailored system.
