Case Study: Enhancing Microscopy Hardware with Custom Adaptations for P&G Group
In a recent collaboration with P&G Group, we successfully customised their existing equipment to elevate its capabilities, and prolong its operational life. Our focus was on the Mitutoyo VMU microscope, a sophisticated unit that required adaptations to address specific challenges posed by the client’s unique subject matter.
Challenge:
The client sought to incorporate a focusing capability into their Mitutoyo VMU microscope, while also requiring versatile movement options for optimal positioning. Additionally, the inspection of an intricate subject matter demanded a dynamic illumination solution that could follow the region of interest.
Solution:
To meet these challenges, we devised a tailored approach. First, we introduced a simple yet robust mounting plate for the Mitutoyo microscope, complemented by an exceptionally durable coarse and fine focusing system and a boom arm stand. This required a slight modification of a standard focusing head, but the choice of materials and design ensured a stable base for the new mounting solution.
Next, we addressed the need for versatile illumination by incorporating doughnut adaptors onto the objective lens. These adaptors seamlessly accommodated a ring light, precisely matched to the objective working distance. This innovation allowed users to effortlessly reposition the field of view, with the illumination consistently aligned. The ring light, controlled through a USB link to a PC, empowered the client to adjust focus, position the field of view, and modify illumination intensity without direct contact with the microscope unit.
Result:
The implementation of these custom adaptations not only enhanced the Mitutoyo VMU microscope’s functionality, but also provided a user-friendly and efficient solution for the client. The stability of the mounting plate, coupled with the dynamic focusing and illumination options, significantly improved the overall microscopy experience.
