Best Scientific supply a variety of lenses for machine vision and inspection systems. Commonly referred to as C-Mount lenses, this is simply an industry term describing their screw thread interface. This thread connects scientific cameras, with their Female C-mount thread, to the lenses corresponding Male C-Mount thread. These are also sometimes known by the term factory automation lenses (FA lenses) but regardless of name, all our lenses provide suitable optics to present information to camera sensors.
These lenses are usually found in factory and production settings, alongside quality control (QC) processes in industry. However, they are so versatile with so many options available we are confident we can supply a lens for most projects, given all the requirements.
There are numerous optical properties to consider when choosing a lens to create a vision system.
The main ones regarding C-mount lenses have been outlined below.
FL: Focal Length, also referred to as the angle of view, this will determine the or size of the area that you can see on the camera, or Field of view (FOV).
WD: Working Distance: The Space between the lens and the sample surface.
F#: F-Number, this refers to the size of the aperture the lens has and is usually adjustable. Aperture adjustment controls the amount of light entering the lens. AKA Iris.
DOF: Depth of Field. The areas of the image that are in focus. Controlled by the Iris or aperture.
All these aspects and more need to be carefully considered, as changing any single optical property can have a direct or inverse effect on the other properties. Calculating the relationship between all these properties, leads to a successful vision system.
There are two main types of C-Mount lenses we offer.
Fixed Focal Length lenses: Sometimes called prime lenses that have a set angle of view.
Varifocal lenses: Sometimes called zoom lenses as the focal length can be changed by moving lenses inside the assembly. This changes their position and therefore the overall angle of view and field of view.
Best Scientific offers C-Mount lenses compatible with various camera chip sizes. You will find a selection of Ricoh (Formerly Pentax) lenses. Starting with lower resolution VGA lenses, moving up to 2MP and 5MP as well as 5MX and 9MP higher resolution models. You will also see the fantastic Zoom 7000 Macro Video Zoom lens (MVZL) From Navitar, which is a versatile and great value varifocal lens for up to 2/3†cameras.
New Lenses are added regularly so if you can’t find what you are looking for, please do contact us for assistance. We have many more lenses available. Best Scientific can retrofit to your existing equipment plus outline in advance of purchase your final system properties in a detailed proposal.
