Upgrading Reichert-Jung Polyvar MET Microscope Illumination with
LED for the University of Cardiff.

Background:

The Reichert Polyvar microscopes, revered as the “Rolls Royce of microscopes,” boast high-end optics and precision machining, simple operation, with brilliant accuracy. This microscope is still very well regarded and sought after. However, the original halogen illumination system faced challenges with colour temperature, performance consistency, lifespan, and energy efficiency. To address these issues, our team embarked on a mission to provide a cutting-edge LED retrofit solution.

Challenges and Considerations:

The main obstacle was exceeding the luminous flux value typical for the existing 12V 100W xenon bulb (about 2550lm). This necessitated enhanced power and a situation whereby there is LED alignment without a loss of emitted lights. The last design was made of LED with more than 3000lm (>3000lm), much above what is allowed by the manufacturer’s norm.

Final Design:

The LED retrofit was carefully designed to be strong, simple, and quick to install. Specific features such as:

• LED to microscope interface.
• 3000 Lum output power.
• 5700K pure white colour temp.
• Adjustability of intensity 0%- 100%.
• 50,000 hrs lifespan.
• Fan cooling system.
• Adjustable collimation lens.  

Installation Overview:

• Remove heat sink fins.
• Replace the halogen bulb.
• Insert a Retrofit plate in the body of polyvar.
• Simply secure the led unit using thumb screws then plug to mains power.

Results:

The Cardiff University users were very satisfied with the improvement in lighting stating that Best Scientific has extended the lifespan of their Polyvar MET microscope.
